Plot Summary War brings death. And wounds and pain to both sides. – Nagato Setting Information Setting: This game takes place in the world of Naruto (as well as Naruto Shippuden and eventually Boruto). You are shinobi from Konohagakure, The Village Hidden in the Leaves. It is the Second Shinobi World War. A war Konoha started. Many nations are involved in this conflict including Konohagakure, Sunagakure, Amegakure, Iwagakure, and the Land of the Sky. The Second Shinobi World War brought forth many heroes and has taken even more lives. It is approximately 25 years before the start of the series. Important Note: This game will take liberties with the official story to meet the needs of the game. Game Structure: This game will be designed around three person teams, which is…dangerous for play-by-post. My thought is that if a decent number of people apply perhaps players can rotate in and out as necessary to keep the game going or have guest players for larger missions when necessary. We’ll see how things go. We'll start with a sort of session 0 training montage for your first 'mission' and move onto our D-rank missions afterwards. Timeline: This takes place ~25 years before Naruto. This puts the Legendary Sannin in their mid 20s, Hatake Kakashi is about two years old, Minato has been a shinobi for about a year, and not yet 'Granny' Chiyo is one of the most feared enemies of Konoha. Never give up without even trying. Do what you can, no matter how small the effect! – The Third Tsuchikage Story Background The Setup: Congratulations on graduating from the Leaf Shinobi Academy. Congratulations you’re officially a genin! Years of hard work have finally paid off! Unfortunately you’ve come of age during a maelstrom of war and destruction where shinobi come face to face with death on almost every mission. Your bildungsroman will be one for the ages. You graduation was a joyous occasion marked with a stark reality. There is a good chance that some of your fellow graduates won’t live to see their Chunin Exams. In one hand you’ve a note telling you to meet for your first mission briefing at 1300 near the clearing behind the Academy, in the other, your Konoha headband. No matter what happens, no one can take that away. A Story Yet Untold Three days before the genin graduation ceremony… Sarutobi Hiruzen sat, pipe in his mouth, staring at a pile of images. The young graduating genin looked back him, their youth faces smiling up from the pages, their stats and specialties detailed on the cards. It was up to him to make the teams, but something was wrong. It was, of course, the war. Hiruzen stood and stepped away from the desk. He turned to look out the window of his office. He could see all Konohakagure, and it seemed so peaceful at night. From where he stood you couldn’t even tell that out there, beyond the trees, beyond the borders of the Land of Fire, a war was raging. A war that had already cost so many lives. And for what? The man said to himself, paying no mind to the other person who had appeared in the room. Lord Third? A man in a clay mask appeared in the center of the room and bowed in deference. I’m not a young man anymore. Oh Lord Second, if only you could see what has happened. Hiruzen sucked on his pipe, his brow furrowing. So many have already died, we can’t send the new genin into this war. Not yet. There was a time when all I dreamed of was the glory of battle. But now, now I see that I can’t control what happens beyond these walls. No matter what we must protect those precious young buds so we can preserve the Will fo Fire. A brilliant flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating the stern gaze of Hokage. A crash of thunder followed booming through the valley. Then a downpour of rain. Go. The man in the clay mask disappeared, the only sign of his presence was a few rustled cards sprawling along the floor. After another long drag of his pipe Hiruzen turned back to collect the cards of the newly graduated genin. It was late, but he still had work to do. This ambition is their long-term goal they wish to achieve as a result of becoming a shinobi, or as a part of becoming a shinobi. Ambitions should be grand in scale. Drive: Describe what Drives your shinobi to want to achieve their goals, and want to realize their ambitions. Your shinobi’s drive will be the core reason behind why they are working so hard. Goals: Your shinobi will always have a plethora of goals they wish to accomplish. Goals are usually short term, and relatively quick to achieve. Fears: What is your shinobi’s biggest fear? Is it death? Failure? Losing a loved one? Not living up to their parent’s overzealous goals set for them? Background: Any core Class: Genjutsu Specialist, Hunter-Nin, Intelligence Operative, Medical-Nin, Ninjutsu Specialist, Scount-Nin, Taijutsu Specialist, Weapon Specialist, Cooking-Nin, Science-Nin Intended Role: Support, scout, ranged damage, melee striker, etc… Physical Description: A description of your character. You may use artwork but are not required to, but please make sure it isn’t a very large image. Personality: What is your character like? How do they respond to the pressures of life? Roleplay Sample: Show me a scene from your character's past and incorporate the elements you listed above where possible. Significant NPCs: Please list two significant NPCs in your character's life, and briefly describe them and their relationship. At least one of them should be a member of your graduating class. That depends on the definitions.

This game does not make use of the Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide or any other of the material written and published by WotC for use in their game Dungeons and Dragons 5 edition.

It does however use material written using the Open Gaming License associated with those products.

This look interesting, but daunting with a all those rules.

Having spend a few hours reading. I think I would try to make a fast lighting katana wielding weapon specialist. I think that would really suit the Namikaze-clan, but apparently it is not one of the clans we can choose. Is there a reason for that? It would seem that they fit perfectly for the village and timeline.

How do you make a no-clan? I can’t seem to find the rules for that.

You may choose Namikaze, I must have just missed it while weeding out the non Konoha/homebrewed clans.

The low starting level is giving me some trouble. This system is unkind to level 1 characters. It locks so many basic abilities behind levels 2 and 3. For example, I was considering an Uzumaki Fuinjutsu specialist. The Uzumaki have a feature that lets them use Constitution instead of Intelligence for Fuinjutsu checks. But it only unlocks at level 3! So my Genin would need to either buy high Intelligence anyway (thus nullifying the clan ability's benefit); Or be completely incompetent at her own speciality for the campaign's first two levels!

Sounds like a genin alright.

I recommend against worrying about min maxing your shinobi, and make your character how you want them to grow.

I don't plan on lingering at level 1 for very long.

Also, you don't need to have a fully built character unless you're accepted into the game unless you need it to help formulate your character.

Not really, no. These are academy graduates. They should at least know the basics. Even at level 1, a Ninjutsu Specialist is supposed to be good at Ninjutsu.

This isn't min maxing. It's about making a character that can actually contribute. This Uzumaki wouldn't even have passed the exam.

I don't plan on lingering at level 1 for very long.

PbP games tend to be slow. Even a relatively quick IG prologue can take a lot of RL time. I prefer to make characters that are fun to play right from the start; Rather than the early game being a miserable slog.

I suppose I'll have to scrap this concept, then. Maybe I'll try a Hyuuga Taijutsu Specialist. They get their signature abilities at level 1.

Quick as lighting. Untouchable as the wind. Strikes as a thunderstorm. Name: Hiroshi Namikaze Clan: Namikaze Age: 11 Ambition: Create a new style of sword figting and through that become the supreme sword master of Konoha and earn recognition for the Namikaze Clan. Drive: Hiroshi have a vision for a new sword fighting style. A vision in his mind that he is unable to tell or explain. Sometimes the vision is clear. He can see it for his eyes. Feel the movements his body need to make. Other times the vision is vague, unclear, foggy. But always. Always it is on his mind. If Hiroshi had been a poet and the style a poem, then he would have written it down. Had he been unable to write it down, he would have screamed it out. That is how much the idea is pushing him. But this is a fighting style and his body is still not well trained enough. His mind is not strong enough. He does not yet know enough. His drive is a vision. A constant itch that he cannot reach. Goals: Almost all of Hiroshis goals focus on the development of his sword style. He wants to visit the Land of Iron and study the samurai sword style. He wants to learn more jutsus. He wants to try and turn some of his clans genjutsus into bukijutsu. Hiroshi have affinity for both lighting and air, but is currently only able to use one of them properly. He very much want to also unlock the other. Fears: Hiroshi have two great fears. His first and most common fear is that his sword style will be a failure. That he vision will fall short when it meets reality. His greater fear is that the style will never be created. That Hiroshi will never have the speed, strenght, knowledge and training to make it a reality. That it will forever be an itch that he cannot scratch. A mirrage he cannot reach. A breath he cannot take. Background: Hard Worker Class: Weapon Specialist - Primal Weapon Form Intended Role: Melee striker, with some ranged attack, scouting skills and speeeeeed Physical Description: Hiroshi is short and slender. Small even for a child of his age. Like other from his clan Hiroshi have blond hair and blue eyes, but while his hair is still semi-long, it is flat and not wild as for example Minatos. Even though Hiroshi is small it still seems like his cloth is a bit to small for him. It is a bit to tight. A bit to short. What makes Hiroshi really stand out though is the red cap that he weares over his left shoulder, which partly covers his sword and the dark goggles over his headband. Personality: Hiroshi interact with few people, not because he is shy, but because he is inward looking and reflective, so the spend a lot of time thinking and can easy disappear into his own world. He see few reasons to compete with other people or show off. Instead he focus on his own growth and improvement. He seems calm and collected, but can get agitated and impatient. When it is time for action Hiroshi changes in an instant. He explodes with energy and act fast and focused. Roleplay Sample: Hiroshi was eating and reading. Well mostly reading. He had kind of stopped eating 15 minuts ago and the rest of his food was now just getting cold and sad. Hiroshi was looking at a training regime for increasing his strenght. It was like his body refused to bulk up. His father had suggested that he started wearing weighted cloth or body weights. He had even given Hiroshi his own old body weights. Hiroshi smiled at the thought. His father wasn’t always realistic each of the body weights weighed over 50 pounds. Hiroshi was expected to carry several of them on his body, but he was unable to even lift one of them. Using weight training was also out of the question. It might reduce his flexibility and speed, but these new . . . Hiroshi! His mother yelled at him and Hiroshi looked up at her. Finally I got your attention. You are late! Classes starts in 10 minuts. Hiroshi did not hear the last part. He had thrown a kunai out of the window and was already runing up the stairs to his room. There Hiroshi grapped his bag and yelled: See you mom. I love you! Before runing over to the window, so he was within sight of his kunai. With his left han hand Hiroshi pulled down his goggles, while he used the right hand and the seal on the kunai to teleport over to it. Hiroshi, already in a sprint, picked up the kunai and ran toward the academy as he dodged betwen the people on the street. Accelerating the entire time. 10 minuts. Across the city. Easy. Perhaps he could even do it without using anymore jutsu. Significant NPCs: There are many significant people in Hiroshis life. His father. His mother. The rest of the clan members. He look up to Minato Namikaze, who is the most powerfull member of the Namikaze clan, but the person who have had most influence on Hiroshi is without doubt Itachi from the Land of This. Hiroshi had been training in Namikaze clan jutsu, since an early age, increasing his speed and agility, but already as a young child he had doubts. What was the use of speed and agility on its own? He could quickly outrun, outmaneuver and outposition people. But then what? What was his offense? How was he supposed to actuelly hurt or kill people. He couldn’t outrun people to dead. That all changed when his father, Chiko Namikaze, introduced him to Itachi. Itachi was a friend of Chiko and was about to spend several weeks in Konoha protecting a diplomatic mission from the Land of This. Itachi showed Hiroshi the samurai way of sword fighting and it changed everything for Hiroshi. The next few weeks Hiroshi took time out of his normal training schedule to train with Itachi and his vision of a new fighting style started taking shape. It would be a style that combined genjutsu, bukijutsu, sword, kunai, throws, speed, wind release and lighting release into one single method of fighting. Fast as lighting. Unpredictable like the wind. Itachi did not stay for longer. The diplomatic mission stayed for a little more than a month and Itachi had to return to the Land of This. At the academy Hiroshi became good friends with Yo. A slow, but gentle giant with an affinity for earth. Yo and Hiroshi shares a fundamental calm nature with each other, but were Hiroshi can get agitated and impatient, Yo have an inner calm that Hiroshi tries working towards.

Among a group of Hyuga guarding a member go the main family Ashido looks to some to be a cousin from a distant village. His hair is black and unkempt, pushed off his face from his headband alone, a confident grin on his face often. Even his outfit looks out of place, often wearing functional simple clothing, a blue high necked shirt with brown 3/4 pants form fitting enough for combat. Before a fight Ashido is often seen wrapping his knuckles and wrists with bandages and stretching, always eager to engage and forcing the best out of his opponent. Personality:   Ashido appears larger than life, always attempting to uphold his resolve and engage with the main players of the situation at hand. He fancies himself a leader and will put forward an idea despite the reaction of those around him. He is always confident in his own abilities and will even reveal weaknesses he may possess for a better battle. In school Ashido was not the best at ninjustu or genjutsu but like many of his clansmen was adept at taijutsu. For spectators a typical Hyūga fight may seem dire but Ashido's approach focuses on overwhelming his opponent and then delivering the decisive strike. Thus Ashido works to make his opponents fight his battle rather than reacting and trying to predict the moves of the game. Toward difficulties in life such as his father being crippled and cared for by his younger siblings and aunt; Ashido attempts to keep a strong outer appearance and focus on the task at hand. He looks to better himself and become a Jonin as soon as possible. In so doing helping support his family and receive the benefits from serving the village so more care can be payed for. Ashido is known within those closest to him that he attempts to ignore worsening circumstances of health and anything he cannot control; instead trying to train and look ahead. His follow-up answer to becoming a Jonin would be to boost his reputation and accept other forms of income that would bring no dishonour upon his family. His dream would be to pay for a house as big as a main house family would reside in with serving staff. When Ashido has down time he can often be found among his click for 5-8 boys, they enjoy games, running through the forests and sparring. Almost half are other Hyūga "commoners" as the main house may see them but the rest come from everywhere. Ashido is often the one who holds the group together, speaks for them and bears responsibility whenever they got into trouble. Never being labelled a troublemaker unlike some of his click he was just a boy and boys play. Occasionally whenever Konoha's gates were closed, the play would take place among the village. Jumping off rooftops into the river for the thrill and just enjoying each other's company. Ashido often would be able to charm his way into getting some cheap snacks during their exploits always getting a grin from some of the older girls and easy going mothers. Furthermore Ashido was the ringleader of the click, he was the best combatant and able to outmanoeuvre the rudimentary ninjutsu some of his friends could muster. Ofcourse the Hyūga boys could put some pressure on Ashido but he seemed to always have luck, skill or more metal than them. He knew how to conduct himself appropriately but also knew to read the room, often leading to four completely different greetings within the hour. Ashido knew people but what he didn't realise was that people knew him aswell. Some in the village took pity on the boy, others were just grateful he wasn't another troublemaker, and those of the main house knew him as a wounded party with some ambition. Roleplay Sample: -   It was the first day of clone jutsu lessons, Ashido's click began to murmur at the new boring session. Ashido as he often would had his eye on Inane, he just knew she would have no problem with it. He was correct, Inane was third to be called and without missing a beat she replicated the jutsu. Ashido was among the last and thankfully watching everyone else go before him gave him the insight to perform the jutsu. He passed easily enough, his click praised him as he sat down. One of the troublemakers commented outloud "Surprise surprise the pretty boy was able to do it. Couldn't punch your way through ey ?" Ashido looked over it was Kosuke Inuzuka the short red head, more of a pit-bull than person. A wannabe hunter-nin with a chip on his shoulder. Ashido muttered something to his click who giggled looking at Kosuke, with little warning Kosuke cussed out Ashido, and proclaimed him a coward and a son of a failure. The classroom went quiet as Ashido glared at Kosuke, the atmosphere was palpable. Sensei could see the problem being a foundation of bad blood; in a very unorthodox move Sensei allowed the two to fight in the training grounds. A surprise sparring session for the entire class, the two upset parties were unsurprisingly paired off. Much of the sparring ceased to watch the fight, Sensei watched closely to ensure the fight didn't get out of hand. Ashido was used to sparring with other Hyuga but was not about to back down. Kosuke's dog was only a pup and unable to fight alongside yet. No kunai or shrunken, smoke bombs or explosive tags allowed. The two squared off, Kosuke sped off toward Ashido and took the first blow. Ashido's unperfected heavenly spin was able to repel the attack but he was caught off guard after he attempted to regain his stance. His natural instincts told him he needed to push forward and set the pace. He struck low with a side kick and broke Kosuke's stance, he spun and followed up with an elbow too the face, then palm strike into the chest which knocked Kosuke off his feet and the wind out of him. The loud coughing stopped the fight with Ashido's victory, without a word to Kosuke Ashido left. Murmurs carried on as Ashido made his way home. He could hear his sister and younger brother playing. He opened the door and was called in by his father, a man who once stood above 6'2" slender with hard muscles. Now a crippled man sitting in a chair with crutches to help him hobble around, a slightly gaunt face that still smiled at his eldest Akio patted Ashido's back and wanted to know everything about his day at the academy. Ashido fought back a tear and kept his head down as he exaggerated. "Today was good father, my sensei says I'm likely to be the best Hyuga that has walked through the academy." Akio rustled Ashido's hair as the pair watched the younger children play with spinning tops. Ashido's thoughts on tomorrow, Whatever it takes....anything... Significant NPCs: Father - Akio Hyūga, a crippled former bodyguard for a now deceased member of the main house family. Akio was one of three bodyguards, two of whom succeeded at murdering their lord, Akio discovered the scene and attempted to bring the two to justice. However, outnumbered and at disadvantage due to the careful planning of the two Akio was overwhelmed. One of the two was killed by the Lord's young son and the other was able to escape. Akio lost his leg and damaged his spine during the fight. As a result he was disgraced by the Lord's young son. He was branded a failure and received only the benefits for the old and weary not fitting for someone of his station. Love interest - Inane Uchiha   , One of the best students for genjutsu in the class. She has a wonderful control over ninjutsu and her taijutsu is far above average. She is to Ashido the best girl student of the class. Deserving of her reputation as a genius, despite her soft and calm appearance she is sharp and silent often. Also to Ashido she is very popular among her peers despite being rather quiet and reserved. Ashido has always hoped that they might be paired in the same squad.

Taijutsu by definition is a weaponless combat style - so I'm not sure you can specialize with a weapon and taijutsu, but anyone can learn some taijutsu if you want to specialize in a weapon.

Also there is a pdf character sheet linked in the Shinobi Handbook, however since it uses the same basics outlined in the DnD 5e OGL you can use the site's 5e character sheet to build your character.
