Enternal Waltz of the Ruin Obscura

When planar travelers gather on All Hallows Eve, they do not speak of ghosts and goblins. They instead speak of the dark planes of the Wheel. The Hells and the Abyss, certainly, but their talk tends to turn toward the lesser-known realms. Some speak of the vile, disgusting realm of Carceri, for example. Others tell tales of those trapped in the Domains of Dread, caught by the Mists and never to leave. The greatest, however, whisper tales of a forgotten plane. It is like Carceri, in that it is a prison. It is like Ravenloft, in that it draws the evil to it. It is like the Hells, in that it is a land of iron and flame. It is like none of these, however, in that, when the stars are right, it opens. Its full fury is unleashed upon an unlucky world on the Prime, and nothing is left but rock and a few shards of bone. This plane is Perditio.

It is home to the Ruin, suits of armor encasing the souls of the most brutal warriors to ever live. They are led by the Ruin Obscura, witch-kings of the endless hordes. Few know of them, and even fewer have seen them. Perditio's Invasion is a sight few live to see. Travelers of the Wheel are largely unconcerned with it, however. It is rarely unleashed, and even then, only onto forgettable Prime worlds. Even if they do hear of it, they do not care. What happens, then, when the next time the stars are right...Perditio opens onto Concordant?

Sigil, the Metropolis of the Planes. It is home to the mighty, the weak, and the odd. Myriad factions scheme in its confines, and the power players of the multiverse regularly pass through its streets. It is in constant chaos, and inner turmoil only causes the ceaseless commerce to pause for a moment. What would happen, then, were it to come under attack by foes unfazed by the Spire's antimagic, possessed of siege weapons that can reach even that great height? Will the powers that infest it be able to hold out? Or will the Ruin sweep over Sigil like it has countless other worlds? No help from the gods will be found. Only the next best thing...

I am looking for 4 PCs. There will be a total of 5, as Randos has already called dibs on a slot. This will not be a first-come, first-serve game, althought I will be more likely to accept earlier entries than later ones. If the thread's hit page 10, chances are I've made up my mind. Once I have some players, I'll post a link to the game.

ECL: 30. There is a minimum of 15 hit dice.
Stats: Roll 5d6 six times, drop the lowest two. Please keep all character-related dices rolls in this thread (stats, Robe of Useful Things, etc.)
Races: Any, as long as the LA doesn't conflict with the minimum HD. Choose weird things. It is Planescape, after all.
Alignment: Any.
Allowed Books:
-Core Rules
-Completes
-Draconomicon
-Libris Mortis
-Lords of Madness
-Arcana Evolved
-Frostburn
-Sandstorm
-Stormwrack
-Magic of Incarnum
-Eberron Campaign Setting
-Player's Guide to Faerun
-Book of Vile Darkness
-Book of Exalted Deeds
-Races of Faerun
-Races of Destiny
-Races of the Wild
-Expanded Psionics Handbook
-Epic Level handbook (I lose an internet for forgetting to post this at first XD)
-Monster Manual II
-Fiend Folio
-Monster Manual III
-Selected material from Planewalker.com (check with me if you want to use crunchy stuff from there)
-I do not own a copy of either Manual of the Planes or the Planar Handbook, though a write-up/summary of what you want to use will convince me to allow material from them.
Equipment: Players begin with 4,300,000 gp. Custom items are allowed, though I would like to see a write-up before I'll allow it. Players also begin with one minor artifact. It may come from a published source or be custom-made, but please tell me where you found it and, if not from one of the allowed books, give me a write up.
Backgrounds: The game is set in Planescape, though most characters will have begun their careers on other planes. Feel free to use any setting, even homebrew (though I'd like some background information if it's homebrew). When writing your background, please follow these guidelines (written by Aerondor, I always thought they were excellent epic guidelines and try to follow them when I can):

Quote:
Description: What people see when first they lay eyes on you.
Personality: Various quirks, traits, mannerisms. What does she like to do? What really irritates her?
Family: Parents. Name your parents. Heck even if you are an orphan who grew up on the streets, name the beggar that cared for you. Are you married? Do you have children?
History: Epic characters should have a good history, deeds done, towns saved, dragons slain, holy quests completed, volcanic eruptions averted. Not all of the history will necessarily be public knowledge of course, especially for the quieter members of the community., but..
Famous deeds performed: At least three famous deeds that just about everyone in the Flanaess will know are associated with you. Did you charm the dragon Flaztrial with your singing and thus save the prince Justine? Did your sword and shield turn back the Bloody Axe clan of Orcs from mountain passes approaching Loftwick? Armed with naught but your faith did you venture into the lair of the Lich Azuazite and end its rein of terror? Go back and add some more details on these events to the history section.
Friends: Doing all those deeds must have earned you a number of friends. Whether it was Granny Gloster whose nephew you saved from the kobolds many years ago, or the ancient order of Maeston whose holy relic you recovered. Who regards you as a valued friend and might call on you for assistance again? Three people/groups that might help you out in a difficult spot, or might want you to do likewise.
Enemies: And of course, during those years you probably upset some people as well. Are you arch rivals with the Paladin Noomin after beating him in last years joust? Does the demon lord Iquzugugu bear undying emnity to you for spoiling his plans..again? At least two major enemies, these can be organisations as well as individuals.
Home: Describe your home, your keep, temple, library, demi-plane, whatever. Who lives there with you?
Age: A sticky one, but... how old is your character? I will be suspicious of any epic character that isn't at least thirty years older than the starting age for their profession. This may mean that half orc barbarian has hit middle age. Think about it, and about appropriate stat adjustments.
Posting: While updating several of my games, this occurred to me. Many on this site fail to follow one of the rules of writing, in that whenever someone speaks, a new paragraph is begun. Now, in a PbP game, this may seem uneeded (since in each post one character is speaking), but it is so much easier on me to be able to look at a line and see just speech or actions. Please, after each grouping of speech is done, make a new line.

Wow, sounds amazing, I was looking for a game like this for a long time. A few of the Epic type games that I have been accepted in have never started, It looks like you have a lot more planned for the game. Thank you it is, a for lack of a better word, an Epic Undertaking. I shall roll my stats.

Dice Roll:
(as this is an older post, these rolls are interpreted by the older (more basic) dice roller code)
5d6: 3, 2, 4, 1, 4Total = 14
5d6: 6, 2, 1, 4, 1Total = 14
5d6: 6, 2, 3, 1, 1Total = 13
5d6: 4, 3, 1, 5, 2Total = 15
5d6: 1, 2, 6, 6, 5Total = 20
5d6: 5, 3, 1, 4, 2Total = 15

I've been looking for an epic game to play in, and this is the first one I've seen that doesn't already have dozens of applicants to compete against. And to top it off, it sounds interesting! How amazing is that? I'll write up a backround and get it in later, but why not start with ability scores?

Dice Roll:
(as this is an older post, these rolls are interpreted by the older (more basic) dice roller code)
5d6: 2, 6, 5, 4, 6Total = 23
5d6: 6, 3, 6, 1, 4Total = 20
5d6: 6, 1, 5, 2, 2Total = 16
5d6: 6, 2, 4, 1, 1Total = 14
5d6: 2, 2, 1, 3, 6Total = 14
5d6: 6, 6, 6, 1, 4Total = 23

That makes 17, 16, 13, 12, 11, 18. That's pretty good. At any rate, I should have a pretty interesting character using that crazy mix of high and average abilities.

Excellent setting, certainly the first ECL 30 game I have considered joining.

Might I suggest you redirect dice rolls to a game thread, people can cheat in this forum, and you would never know.

Also, are there alignment restrictions and relatedly, could we play, for instance, a chaotic good bone devil
Are there any special rules regarding epic spells and the xp costs
And perhaps the age thing as quoted in Aerondor's post, should be reconsidered. What's middle age for a half dragon, half fiend half elemental xill?

-Alignment restrictions + Planescape = Mishandling of the setting. XD. A good-aligned fiend is pushing it, though. Neutral's okay, however (unless said fiend's alignment was magically altered).
-For researching epic spells, every point of experience costs 5 gp.
-For many of the supernatural templates, the maximum ages gets so high that considering it is often a waste of time. I figure a half-dragon would age a little better than a half-elf, and the xill...can get really old XD.

Blayz brought up a good point, though. Any post with a crucial dice roll in it (such as stats) that has been edited will be disqualified.

Do you have an alignment in mind for this game? Because I have hankering to play a rakshasa, but that's a bit of a stretch if it's a good campaign.

EDIT: nm, answered while I was posting

Id' be extremely hypocritical for me to make this a good-aligned campaign, as I love playing evil characters to death. With very few exceptions, I can't stand play good characters. Unless they're slayers of Domiel or something of the like XD.

A rakshasa would be awesome. Any idea what kind you'd want to play?

Naes, it's not just edited posts. Although I think the moderators sweep through now and again to make sure it's not happening, I believe that people sometimes have been known to delete posts and reroll. You wouldn't be able to see that here, but you would in a game thread.

I want to build a Psychic Weapon Master to try out the class. I just wanted to state my interest.

EDIT AGAIN: When is the deadline for our character submissions?

EDIT yet again:

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: Gorth is now in his 42nd year. He stands well over six foot tall and weighs in at two-hundred-twenty pounds. His hair is long and used to be black but now it is mixed with much silver as well. His blue eyes are clear and as sharp as ever. He is quite muscular and deep in the chest, an imposing presence. One would be hard pressed to find any fat on the man. Constant training with the hand and a half blade has left the man in excellent shape.

Personality:Gorth Dural is friendly yet a reserved man. He is not very trusting of strangers. Having been burned too many times, he is now cautious as a rule. The man is relaxed on the surface, but this only conceals the fearful nature underneath. He is very inquisitive and is intrested in challenging himself to test his mettle and that of his travel companions.

Family: Sir Garethel Duraul a valiant Knight in service to his King. The Lady Galina honored and trusted in the Kings royal court. Sir Garethel fought alongside King Reginald when he slew the evil demon who was known as Flametear the Fallen. His father is still alive but lost to Gorth, he thinks his father dead. His mother is living still in thier family home. He is the only child of Galina and Garethel. His great grandfather was a seer some called him an oracle. He died from old age more than fifty years ago. Gorth visits his mother on the all the important holidays and when he is in the area.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Gorth Duraul was born to loving and caring parents like most children. The only difference was he was born to parents of heroic proportions. His father Sir Garethal was as renowned for his glory in battle and his mother Galina was a prominent lady of the kings cortege. King Reginald the slayer of demon lords, king to sir Garethel, lord to the lady Galina. Gorth was an only child and his parents tended to be overly protective of him at times. He was raised with every priviledge that one of such a position could ever hope to have. His father began to teach him with the sword at an early age. When he was barely old enough to hold the wooden training weapons his sire had him practicing the basic steps and breathing rituals.

Gorth was a natural with the forms and the balde as well. The only problem was his heart was more in touch with the book learing that his mother insisted he have. He hadn't the heart to tell his father so he dutifully attended his training sessions each morning and then spent hours upon hours with his nose stuck in the books. He loved to read about the famous arcanist or even the infamous masters most of all and their mystical deeds. His greatest dream was to one day wield the same power of these masters of magic.

The young man was sent to the best of schools where he continued to train with the blade to honor his fathers wishes. His interest was based in the arcane so he focused his studies there. It was only a few months into his training that he discovered that he had no spark of the gift in him. He was unable to touch the weave much less manipulate it. In his research of the magic he so desired Gorth discovered books with complete dissertations about the ability known as "Psionics". He did discover that with mental training he was able to enter a state of hyperawareness that allowed him to focus his mental energies to manifest his own personal weave. He used his understanding of the arcane arts to help him manifest this psychic energy.

It was during his training that he met the woman who would later become his wife. Merina Fairaven acolyte of faith in the church of Sif. Sif's clergy, predominately female are also fabled warriors in the regions under the charge of his king. Gorth had already made quite a name for himself as a budding young mage of some renown. For one with no more training than the man had, he was for the most part self taught. Having no instructor but free access to the ancient tomes of knowledge, his training progressed faster than anyone ever suspected. His great grandfather had set aside for him books of learning not available to most of the students. His great grandfather was a seer, and had left the books for him to study for he had known that young Gorth would have need for them.

These books opened the door so to speak, for him to begin his training with crystal weapons like the one in the armory of his home. His father had told him his great, great, grandfather was a man possessed of great powers. He had been the one to train his father with the blade. Although Garethel hadn't the ability to use the full potential of the weapon he did learn the forms and the patterns of the dance. His inability to reach the full potential of the weapon never discouraged the man from his goal of blademaster. The dark green crystal blade sat idle in the armory of his home in a place of honor. Gorth had planned to retrieve the weapon when he went home for the winter holiday but that was not how it came to pass.

It was his sixth year of training away at school when he was summoned to the headmasters council chamber. Albeit not for the first time. Gorth was summoned there for reasons unkown to him when he heard the fateful news. Although he had heard rumor of unrest back home the man had no idea that there was indeed an uprising, not from goblins or trolls but from demons. The message was from his king Reginald. The royal courier delivered the dispatch from his liege directly to Gorth's hand. He quickly broke open the seal and scanned the missive. As his eyes soon came to realize his father had fallen in battle and been taken by the demons from the field of battle. His king was asking for his rapid return and sent money for a wizard to transport him home.

It was explained to him by king Reginald that Sir Garethel had fallen in battle and his body was not recovered. Only his helmet was found, no other trace of the hero was to surface. The battle with Mammon's minions, who were trying to open a portal to this realm, was fierce indeed. His fathers last act had been to destroy the diabolical plans of the Archdevil's minions. Overcome by grief he turned on the king accusing him of using his father as a shield. He rebeled against the royal court and vowed to find the devil who had killed his father.

It was fifteen years before the man found his way to the abyss and the evil Archdevil. There he discoverd to his surprise that his father yet lived. His small group of followers had made their way to Mammon's domain. Entering the tomb he stumbled across the tortured husk of his father's body. Amazingly the man was still alive. Garethel begged only for a swift death to end his relentless torture. Gorth was reluctant to comply but how could he refuse what would be the last request of his long lost father? The incessant torture had left the man clearly insane. One of his faithful followers offered to relieve him of this burden but Gorth refused to let anyone else do the deed. With grim determination he granted his father's final request.

I have more to write but I hope this is enough to get me in the game.

Famous deeds performed: He saved an outlying community from a young adult dragon named Lustmaw. He had red scales and exceptionally large fangs. Lustmaw was extorting the community for gold or young maidens. Sometimes he demanded both. The town to this day calls him thier savior. The man entered the drragon's lair unarmed and summoned a weapon to kill the beast after the creature let its guard down but for a moment. Flattery does wonders sometimes.

Another of his famous deeds was when he helped to save the kingdom from an undead threat sprouting up across the land. Reports were growing more frequent with each passing week. The pattern of the reports seemed to be centered around Cahemor area. He lead a small band where they encountered a strange cauldron spewing forth zombies dozens at a time. All of this was orchestrated by a foul devil named Boschuac. Gorth faced the devil alone while the rest of the group mopped up the zombies.

Yet another of his famous deeds was the time when two Juggernaught's were sent against the Kings forces along with a not so small army. Reluctantly the man returned to aid the man by this time he was not too fond of. In one of his last deeds in his home region he was able to dimension door inside of the construct as it began its assualt. He was able to quickly overcome the two wizards controlling one of the behemoth's. He then used the captured one to attack the other, ending the major threat form the attacking armies.

Friends: His friends are few and far between. Although the man is called hero in his homeland, he has but two people he calls friends. One is a creature he met while travelling the planes in the city of Sigil. Oyaik Devilsinger a Buomman monk. The strange thing about this man, he's never spoken a word to the man but in spite of this they are close friends. He came to discover later, the Buomman people take a vow of silence at a very early age.

His only other friend is realitvely new, an adult crystal dragon known only as Highsoar. He met the dragon on the elemental plane of air on one of his latest planar adventures. Highsoar was under attack by six ghastly creatures know as Belker's. Gorth came to the dragons defense slicing the head off of one beast with his first blow from the vorpal crystal sword. Within two minutes the rest were either slain or on the run. He came to find that Highsoar was quite voluble, the creature would talk your ear off. You could hardly get a word in with the crystal being.

Enemies: The Archdevil Mammon is the most troublesome to the man. Her has kidnapped and tortured the mans father. Sent throngs of his minons against Gorth's homeland. He even sent an assassin who killed the mans wife. Nothing would please Gorth more than to find the snake of a devil and wipe him from this existence.

King Reginald at one time a trusted friend, has banished him from the realm due to his open contempt of his liege. He holds Reginald responsible for the years of torture his father endured under the claw of Mammon. If he were to see the man today he's uncertain if he would let the man live or not.

Home:He makes his home in the planar city of Sigil for the last 2 years. He keeps a room in the Hive district, at an inn named "The Fat Harper". He still travels exploring the planes and is only in Sigil when not adventuring. He has no home other than his family home on the material plane where his mother still lives. He seldom gets to visit anymore but he does still sneak in to see her on special occasions.

Age:Gorth has lived for four decades and then some. He's 42 years old.

I hope you like the character concept. He is a fighting machine mobility on the battlefield is his specialty. He is also a 20th level psionic manifester able to shapechange if needed. He has some limited healing abilities also.

Excellent! Epic is bread and butter, but Planescape is cake and punch! I'd like to express my interest in this game. Or more specifically, my interest in making a detailed, fun, and delightfully dangerous character for this endeavor.

Blayz, it would be a joy to play alongside you for a change. Naes, it would be most excellent to try playing under your creative and watchful eye.

Tossing out early concepts:
  • Eternal Epic Warforged Artificer
  • Ultimate Tri-Theurge (Psi/Arc/Div)
  • Waste-Walker of the Planar Vast
